3) Top Tech Tidbits Now Seeking Two Paid Editorial Contributors To Join Our Team. Deadline Moved Up. Both Positons Fully Remote. Details Here.

We have received so many applications for the originally announced position in just the first week that we have made the decision to move the deadline up to September 15th 2021. So there's still time, but the window is now closing. In addition, because we have received applications from so many editors that we believe would truly make Tidbits even better than it is today, we have also made the decision to hire a 2nd paid Editorial Contributor from this very same applicant pool, in addition to the 1st paid Editorial Contributor position that we announced last week. This 2nd paid Editorial Contributor will now mark our limit to the number of paid editors that Tidbits can sustain at any one time. Two. In additon to the two that volunteer on behalf of Mind Vault. From all of us here at Tidbits I cannot tell you how very excited we are to welcome two new editors aboard. And we know that readers are excited too. For those of you that have already applied, thank you. We are truly humbled. We had no idea that so many people wished to be involved in Tidbits. But now, we hear you. And we will continue to look for ways to get more of you involved. For those still interested, we encourage you to apply by or before September 15th 2021. Updated information on both positions can now be found here:

4) Accessible Online Editor for Python

I am Syed Billah; I am an assistant professor at the Pennsylvania State University. One of our research agenda is to make computer programming accessible to students with vision impairments. Our lab recently developed a research prototype of an accessible online editor for Python. Programming languages like Python are predominantly visual. As a result, sighted programmers often rely on visual cues, such as empty spaces, highlighting parentheses, to write error-free code in an editor. Unfortunately, most editors fail to properly convey these visual cues in audio, making it difficult to write code non-visually. We hope our prototype overcomes these challenges and lets someone writes Python code non-visually. Currently, we are running a study to test this prototype. We invite adults with vision impairments who are familiar with Python to participate in our study.Participants will be asked to read/write simple Python code non-visually using screen readers (e.g., NVDA). The study will be conducted over Zoom video conferencing software. It will take 2 hours, and we'll pay an Amazon Gift card of USD $50 to compensate for the individual's time. Please note that payment may take a week due to the official process. If you are interested, don't hesitate to contact me, Syed Billah at sbillah@psu.edu. Thank you. Syed M. Billah, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Information Science and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania:

14) Notes on Synthetic Speech | September 3rd 2021

I use a screen reader and it sounds the same, whatever I'm doing - reading an email from a friend, reading news of a global disaster, reading something in the first-person female or first-person transgender, shopping for clothes or scrutinising a business contract. Although the quality of voices used by screen readers is OK, you're never in any doubt that you're listening to synthetic speech - and believe me, it's boring!.

1) The Challenges Visually-Impaired People Have in the Workplace

In recent years, organizations all over the country have started to recognize the importance of making everyone feel safe, included, and comfortable in the workplace. As a result, the modern office has become more diverse in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, and religion. However, we still have a long way to go when it comes to making the workplace more inclusive towards people with disabilities — especially to those who are blind or visually-impaired. This has undoubtedly discouraged and obstructed visually-impaired adults from pursuing a full time job, and it is estimated that more than 70% of them remain unemployed today:

2) The Issues With Accessibility at Live Music Venues

Although for a while it felt like we'd never step foot into a concert again, the recent Boris-approved abandonment of most Covid measures marks the return of live music. This also means the return of the well-established accessibility issues that have always plagued concert-goers with disabilities. From painfully understaffed disabled booking lines to inaccessible seating, people with disabilities have to jump through many metaphorical hoops in order to be able to enjoy live music. As we take these first steps back to live shows, I want to reflect on my experiences of concerts, and how gigs can be made accessible to more people:

4) Make Accessibility Part Of Your Startup's Products And Culture From Day One

The world of accessibility has experienced a tipping point thanks to the pandemic, which drove people of all abilities to do more tasks and shopping online. For the last year, the digital world was the only place brands could connect with their customers. A Forrester survey found that 8 in 10 companies have taken their first steps toward working on digital accessibility. What's driving this change besides the increased digital interactions? Fortune 500 companies are finally starting to realize that people with disabilities make up 1 billion of the world's market. That population and their families control more than $13 trillion in disposable income, according to Return on Disability's "The Global Economics of Disability:"

1) Availability Of Healthcare Information To Blind And Visually Impaired Healthcare Users During The COVID Pandemic

Clsoe Date: September 30th 2021 Dear Listers, this is Sushil Oswal from the University of Washington. I am the principal investigator on a survey about the availability of healthcare information to blind and low-vision consumers during the past 18 months. This is an important survey for our blindness community because it will give us an opportunity to express our experiences of finding healthcare information during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please give us as much of your personal experiences as you can so that our study could create a comprehensive picture of the healthcare information barriers blind people face particularly under pandemic conditions. We will do a small draw of ten $25 gift cards for this survey. Besides publishing in academic journals, we will be producing a report on the basis of this healthcare information survey which will be shared with as many local and state-level health departments as possible. This report will also be available to blindness community at large. To complete the survey, please click the link below. If you have any questions about the survey, or you have difficulty completing the survey, please email me at oswal@u.washington.edu 📧️. About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.

What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, afforable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
