This Week's Featured Advertisement: Meet Polly — APH's Newest Talking Braille Device!
APH, in partnership with Thinkerbell Labs, is excited to bring to market a new, electronic Wi-Fi enabled device to Federal Quota and standard purchase customers within the United States. Polly will assist users in learning and reinforcing both contracted and uncontracted braille characters while also mastering beginning literacy skills. Polly's many components for input and output can provide practice and gamify the braille learning process for students.
Teachers will have the ability to create individualized vocabulary/spelling lists and customize the order of lessons on the device, tailoring to students' learning needs through the online portal, Helios, included with purchase. Customizing lessons enables Polly to reinforce any braille curriculum teachers may already be using with students. Progress data are displayed in accessible charts and graphs for ease of record keeping.

The Microsoft Soundscape app enables anyone to hear the physical world around them. It's a powerful tool that reimagines how technology can enhance independence and mobility, and was built with the help of Guide Dogs UK and San Francisco Lighthouse for the blind, organizations that empower the blind and people with low vision with technology, training and more. Throughout National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Microsoft shared examples of how advances in technology can make a difference in the lives of the more than 1 billion people with disabilities around the world, and in this video, Amos Miller shows CEO Satya Nadella how he uses the app to navigate the Microsoft campus in Redmond:
7) What Is WordPress And Should You Use It?
While this article is not specific to accessibility, I, Aaron Di Blasi, Publisher for Top Tech Tidbits, and web developer for Mind Vault Solutions, Ltd., can attest to the general accessibility of the WordPress suite for blind, visually impaired, deaf, deafblind and disabled website developers. Here at Mind Vault we host WordPress websites for several BVI clients that in turn administrate these sites themselves through WordPress. It is an incredibly flexible and accessible platform for web development and this article outlines many of the reasons that I recommend it to clients so often:

The Ctrl+F6 shortcut in Excel doesn't behave the same way as Word or PowerPoint. It changed a few years ago to behave differently from what most Office users expect. Ctrl + F6 will switch (cycle through) the open windows in Word or PowerPoint. It's a quick way to move between different documents/slides. Since Windows doesn't have a global shortcut to cycle through open windows of an app, it's a useful shortcut to remember:

20) Cache the World Opt-In Preview From Mozilla Firefox
Firefox's accessibility engine dates back many, many years, having received a hurried but less than ideal update with Firefox's move to a multi-process architecture about 5 years ago. The current Firefox multi-process accessibility architecture suffers from considerable, sometimes catastrophic performance issues and is more costly and difficult to maintain than they would like. These deficiencies prompted the team to design and build a newer, faster and more maintainable accessibility engine and the team has dubbed that project "Cache the World". It's called that because the new engine automatically sends information from web content processes to a cache in the browser's main process for consumption by assistive technologies:
21) Six Months With Android: A Journey From A Blind Perspective
During the last six months, I've used Android exclusively as my primary device. I made calls with it, texted with it, read emails with it, browsed the web, Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook with it, and played games on it. Now, I'm going to express my thoughts on it, its advancements, and its issues. This will contain mostly opinions, or entirely opinions, depending on whether you really love Android or not. But whatever your stance, these are my experiences with the operating system. My issues may not be your issues, and so on:

Accessibility, especially in academia, has been a topic of conversation for quite some time. People with a wide range of disabilities have the right to certain accommodations in order to allow them to work or study at the same level, however, often places do not even do the bare minimum. You don't have to have speaking experience! We would love to have first-time speakers present and can support you in presenting as needed. You don't have to be an "expert" or have any special certifications. Anyone with something to share related to accessibility on the web or in WordPress is invited to apply. You can share your journey learning about accessibility or your experience as a person with a disability even if you don't think you've reached the end of that journey yet. Your topic doesn't have to be explicitly WordPress related. While we want some talks specific to WordPress and want to encourage developer-level presentations, not all talks need to be specific to WordPress. General website accessibility talks with broad applications for websites of all types and people of all levels of technical abilities are welcome. If you have an idea for a talk to share your knowledge or experiences about the intersection of WordPress and accessibility, we'd love to hear it!

"The Audio Description Awards Gala will celebrate the best of the best within the art and science of inclusive audio-described media," said Eric Bridges, ACB's Executive Director. About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.
What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
