6) Smart Home, Health Tech, and Everything Else We Saw at CES | Wired

In the world of consumer tech, there's no palate-cleanser for the new year quite like the annual CES, the giant electronics show. What better way to kick off 2023 than to find your way through the maze of metal and screens (and germs) and Alexa-equipped toothbrushes and pet-feeding robots (and germs) and hyper-futuristic electric vehicles that may never actually ship (also, probably germs)? Our WIRED editors are on the ground at CES, keeping an eye out for the most important developments to emerge from the gadget extravaganza:

9) The Silly, Wild And Absurd Tech We Found At CES 2023 | Gizmodo

CES is usually bursting at the seams with absolutely pointless stuff that's been given a technology injection for absolutely no reason. Unlike many before it, this year's CES was a little less stupid, but 2023 still brought with it some silly stuff. The following is a wrap-up of everything that made me stop and go, 'hmm. Do we really need that?' or 'Wow this is bizarre, but I kinda really like it'. It's a very scientific scale, so without further ado:

15) These Trends At CES Are Shaping The Future Of Technology | CNet

If you want to know where the future of technology lies, then CES 2023 is where you needed to be. The show floor was filled with buzzy, headline-grabbing products of the week, like a toilet sensor that can read your pee or a color-changing car with AI sass. But these are products you likely aren't buying soon. The real value of the world's largest consumer electronics trade show is how it lays out a vision for where tech may go in the coming months and years:

19) ChatGPT And Programming: Incredible. Terrifying. I Love It. | Iestyn Lloyd

Publisher (Di Blasi): I, personally, began my programming journey as a child on a Tandy TRS-80 that I bought from Radio Shack. I bought it. I brought it home. I hooked it up to the TV. Yes, to the TV. Via RCA I think? White, yellow and red? Turned on the power and the whole screen glowed a light blue except for a single blinking white cursor in the top left hand corner of the screen. I pressed the keys on the keyboard and the characters appeared on the screen. That was the level of knowledge I began with. From there I digested all of the documentation I could find and eventually learned the BASIC programming language. This acronym stood for Beginner's All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. I used it to write a software program to help me study for my SATs. And I was off. From there I moved on to a Commodore 64. And then a 128. Ooh. That stood for 128K. And then came DOS. And then came IBM. And then came Dell. I was pretty much Microsoft Windows all the way. I didn't venture into the Apple camp until I held a position as a graphic designer at a firm that used only Apple workstations. So I'd like to think I know a few things. But reading this particular article humbled me so deeply that it reminded me of those first days again, staring at a blank screen, not knowing what a cursor was, what it did, or what was behind it. The magic. The horror. I feel like that is exactly where we are right now with AI. This author's comment, "I feel like a farm worker that has seen a tractor for the very first time," is what made me realize that once again, I know nothing. Iestyn Lloyd: The future is here. I've seen it. I've used it. It has blown my mind. ChatGPT has been released in free research preview and it is incredible. While ChatGPT can do many different things, it's the programming side that I'm particularly interested in. You can ask it — in plain English — to generate code for you by describing what you want the code to do. Recently I've been using MicroPython and Python a lot, so focused on that. Here's some examples:

20) The Fourth Age Of Programming | Jon Stokes | Replit

Publisher (Di Blasi): Following our theme above regarding ChatGPT and the future of programming, I offer you this incredibly informative piece that explains in layman terms exactly what the "singularity" is, and just how close we might be to achieving it. Wikipedia: The technological singularity — or simply the singularity — is a hypothetical future point in time at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization. According to the most popular version of the singularity hypothesis, I.J. Good's intelligence explosion model, an upgradable intelligent agent will eventually enter a "runaway reaction" of self-improvement cycles, each new and more intelligent generation appearing more and more rapidly, causing an "explosion" in intelligence and resulting in a powerful superintelligence that qualitatively far surpasses all human intelligence. Jon Stokes: In normieland, where I still spend plenty of time both online and IRL, software's newfound ability to write, draw, and speak like we humans is often taken as evidence that the machines are about to remake our entire society (again) and totally change the nature and value of labor (again). I don't think the normies are wrong about this, but as flashy as Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT are, old heads know that the Robot Apocalypse has exactly one and only one horseman: computer programs that can write computer programs:

21) ChatGPT Generated AppleScript for Music | Kevin Shaw | AppleVis

Have you ever been listening to the Music app on Mac OS and went, "Oh, I wonder what song this is?" For me, that means command-tabbing to the Music app, getting to the LCD area, interacting and then reading the song title and artist. Wouldn't it be great to hit one key and hear song title and artist, no matter what app you were in?

23) OpenAI Begins Piloting ChatGPT Professional, A Premium Version Of Its Viral Chatbot

OpenAI this week signaled it'll soon begin charging for ChatGPT, its viral AI-powered chatbot that can write essays, emails, poems and even computer code. In an announcement on the company's official Discord server, OpenAI said that it's “starting to think about how to monetize ChatGPT” as one of the ways to “ensure [the tool's] long-term viability.” The monetized version of ChatGPT will be called ChatGPT Professional, apparently. That's according to a waitlist link OpenAI posted in the Discord server, which asks a range of questions about payment preferences including “At what price (per month) would you consider ChatGPT to be so expensive that you would not consider buying it?”

January 25th 2023 | Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights: New Webinar Series with Karen Mayer Cunningham | APH FamilyConnect

4PM PT, 5PM MT, 6PM CT, 7PM ET, 12AM GMT on 1/26
This fall, we were pleased to partner with Karen Mayer Cunningham to present two webinar series. Navigating and Negotiating Successful IEP and 504 Outcomes and Ask the Advocate provided information to parents, professionals, and school-based members. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the IEP and 504 processes as well as the opportunity to ask specific questions about their child's IEPs. These two series have been highly attended, and we have received requests for more content from Karen Mayer Cunningham, the self-proclaimed “Special Education Boss”. The positive feedback and need for more content to support parents and professionals leads to the next series of webinars. We are excited to offer the next series to continue to support parents and professionals. Procedural Safeguards: Procedural Safeguards are handed out, and many don't have a full understanding of the document. Procedural Safeguards and Rights are in place for parents and individuals with a disability between the ages of 3 to 22. Unfortunately, most parents are only asked by school-based members if they “received” their copy of the procedural rights, and would they please sign in receipt of them. While that checks a box for the school, it in no way equips the families with a knowledge of their rights and protection, nor indicates the school's legal obligation. This series will identify your rights and the difference between procedural and substantive requirements. Join the APH ConnectCenter and Karen Mayer Cunningham as we dive into Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights. Learn more: We hope you will join the 6-part webinar series to further your knowledge and understanding of the Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights. Join us at 7:00 pm EST on 1/11, 1/25, 2/8, 2/22, 3/8, and 3/22. Register here:

January 31st 2023 | A Beginner's Guide to Inclusive UX Design

9AM PT, 10AM MT, 11AM CT, 12PM ET, 5PM GMT
Presenters: David Sloan, UX Practice Manager, and David Swallow, Principal UX Consultant. Digital channels provide an opportunity for you to effectively reach and grow your target audience, communicate with them, provide information, build brand relationships, and enable transactions. The related concepts of usability and accessibility address the importance of removing barriers to efficient, effective, and enjoyable digital interactions for all users, including users with disabilities. When barriers are present, we risk brand damage, losing our audience to competitors, and potentially unlawful discrimination against people with disabilities. Accessibility is often left to developers to deal with, but what can people who don't have coding expertise do to ensure usable and accessible digital experiences? In this webinar, accessibility and user experience specialists David Swallow and David Sloan will address that question. We'll make the argument that a focus on the needs of people with disabilities can help deliver better user experiences for everyone. We'll define key concepts of usability, accessibility and inclusive design, and provide practical tips that everyone, regardless of their role, can apply to make digital experiences more accessible and usable. March 22nd 2023 | Procedural Safeguards and Parental Rights: New Webinar Series with Karen Mayer Cunningham | APH FamilyConnect

About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.

What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
