9) How To Make Telemedicine Work For Visually Impaired Patients

Telemedicine came into its own during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the CARES Act, physicians could bill the same amount for a telemedicine visit with Medicare patients as they could for an in-person visit. And many commercial healthcare insurers followed suit, relaxing restrictions for telemedicine for most patients. This "points to the fact that now that telehealth is mainstream, it is essential that no group be left behind if at all possible," Jonathan Weiner, a professor of health policy and management and health informatics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, tells Fierce Healthcare. "This would include patients with disabilities that impact their use of telehealth as well as those facing technical or financial access barriers. And while telehealth rates may have decreased since the peak of the pandemic, we aren't going back to the pre-COVID era. This mode of care is here to stay, and we must view these barriers as an important potential cause of healthcare disparities:"

Millions of U.S. taxpayers are visually impaired and unable to read print material in a standard font size. (See IRS statement, July 15, 2020.) This settlement resolved a case brought forth by several blind taxpayers and NFB who alleged the IRS was in violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which prohibits individuals with a disability from being excluded from the participation in, being denied the benefits of, or being subjected to discrimination under any executive agency:

October 6th 2022 | 1PM PT, 2PM MT, 3PM CT, 4PM ET, 8PM GMT | Up and down, around and around! Amusement rides are enjoyed by many people, including those with disabilities. The next webinar in the U.S. Access Board's free monthly series will take place October 6 from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. (ET) and review scoping and technical provisions for amusement rides. For newly designed and constructed rides, scoping provisions provide the option to choose the type of access that is suitable for a particular ride or experience. Three options for providing accessibility onto a ride device include a wheelchair space on the ride, a ride seat designed for transfer, or a transfer device. This session will review the technical provisions for each type of access required on rides. Additionally, U.S. Access Board staff Bill Botten and Bobby Stinnette will address requirements for accessible routes, que lines, parking and passenger loading areas, signage, sales, and service counters. Visit Great Lakes ADA Center's AccessibilityOnline webpage for more information or to register. All webinars include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. Webinar attendees can earn continuing education credits. November 2nd 2022 | 8AM PT, 9AM MT, 10AM CT, 11AM ET, 3PM GMT | WordPress Accessibility Day is a free, 24-hour online event scheduled to start at 15:00 UTC (11:00 US Eastern, 8:00 US Pacific) on Wednesday, November 2nd. The conference will be held virtually so you can present from anywhere worldwide. Here are some other important things to know about speaking at WordPress Accessibility Day: We will provide an accessible speaking experience — the presentation platform will be screen reader-friendly, and we will have captions and sign language interpretation available for speakers as needed. You don't have to have speaking experience! We would love to have first-time speakers present and can support you in presenting as needed. You don't have to be an "expert" or have any special certifications. Anyone with something to share related to accessibility on the web or in WordPress is invited to apply. You can share your journey learning about accessibility or your experience as a person with a disability even if you don't think you've reached the end of that journey yet. Your topic doesn't have to be explicitly WordPress related. While we want some talks specific to WordPress and want to encourage developer-level presentations, not all talks need to be specific to WordPress. General website accessibility talks with broad applications for websites of all types and people of all levels of technical abilities are welcome. If you have an idea for a talk to share your knowledge or experiences about the intersection of WordPress and accessibility, we'd love to hear it!

About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.

What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
