DoerrPublisher (Di Blasi): We open this week with a very special review. This reader, Ross A. Doerr, wrote in to ask if we might be interested in helping to share his story with our readership. And we're so very glad that he did. Ross is the author of the book, "One Of The Last New Argonauts: A Review of the ARGUS II Artificial Retinal Implant." In addition to being a cancer survivor, Ross was also the first in the state of Maine (and only the 5th in New England) to have an ARGUS II Bionic Eye (Artificial Retina) surgically implanted in his right eye. This surgery was done at Tufts Medical Center in Boston in April of 2019 with remarkable results. He provided us with a copy of his manuscript for review and we knew instantly that readers would find the information contained within it to be invaluable. So we offered to reformat it for proper conversion into each of the current eBook formats for accessible hosting on the Top Tech Tidbits website, to which Ross so very graciously agreed. So now, instead of being trapped inside the pages of a book, you can read the entire work online, for free (thanks to Ross) in 3 different accessible formats. An online (HTML) version of the book, a Word Document, and a PDF. The Word Document and PDF are approximately 45 pages long. All 3 formats provide a Table of Contents linked to each chapter. Each chapter is designated by a heading. Click on any chapter name to return to the Table of Contents (TOC). It is our sincerest hope that future adventurers will utilize this information to help them make more informed decisions about future bionic implants. Sincerest thanks to Ross for sharing his story with us: 5) JAWS with Microsoft Office Power Tip: Creating And Editing Signatures In Microsoft Outlook With JAWSCourtesy of Freedom Scientific: 6) Adapting Sight | YouTube Channel | Blake SteinekePublisher (Di Blasi): We would also like to introduce you to a Top Tech Tidbits reader by the name of Blake Steineke. Blake is a legally blind reader with a YouTube Channel called Adapting Sight, where you will find videos that teach visually impaired people about technology, talk about accessibility, and show how to make cameras and content creation accessible. A passion of Blake's since losing his sight. Blake also serves one of our Top Tech Tidbits Sponsors and is a member of the US Blind Hockey Team. An inspiration and resource for us all: 7) Mosen At Large: Aira's Astounding Communications Fail, Or How To Lose Friends And Alienate PeopleAira's CEO, Troy Otillio, has published a brief statement on Aira's website, acknowledging the widespread concerns many of us have about how difficult it has been to find out how much we will pay for the new pricing plans. You can now visit this page at https://www.aira.io/offset-prices, and view the complete list of plans in all supported currencies once the Aira offset has been applied. This information is publicly available on the web, without completing a form. The original pricing page still asks that you call Customer Service to get this information, but it is a long weekend in the US and hopefully this will be addressed so that the offset pricing page simply becomes the new pricing page. I want to thank Troy for responding to the community's concerns, and doing so personally on a long weekend. There was always going to be debate and disagreement around the pricing changes, that's the nature of the beast. But at least any remaining debate can occur with ready public access to the essential information about what these increases mean for us as blind people. My original post is below: 8) Aira — We're ListeningOn January 9th 2023 we published new prices for our service, having shared we would do so six months ago. I've heard loud and clear that some of the community is not pleased with me and the communications approach we've taken. Rather than defend any of our actions, I'll take full responsibility as the CEO and leader of Aira. Some immediate actions I am taking: 9) New Tool Based on ChatGPT Roots Out Accessibility Issues In Web PagesPublisher (Di Blasi): And so the application of ChatGPT to website accessibility begins. Government Technology: As digital citizen engagement becomes more important for local and state governments, public agencies have to pay more attention to accessibility and compliance issues. The newest product launch from Equally AI could help meet some of those demands, according to the company. The Israel-based firm has launched Flowy, a ChatGPT-powered platform designed to help developers "ensure the accessibility of their web products," according to a statement from the company: 10) Use This Prompting Trick To Improve ChatGPT's Performance | Aron BrandAs a powerful and versatile language model, ChatGPT from OpenAI has the ability to engage in complex debates on a wide range of topics. However, to truly showcase its analytical capabilities and produce deep and thought-provoking responses, a trick can be employed to elicit more detailed and structured answers: 11) 10 Things You Didn't Know ChatGPT Could Do | ghacks.netHere are 10 incredible things you likely didn't know you could do with ChatGPT. The list below courtesy of @thesyedhuq on Twitter, who recently went on a ChatGPT deep dive, exploring every facet of its capabilities: 12) AI-Generated Images From AI-Generated Alt Text | Adrian RoselliDear sighted reader, I want you to read this post without looking at the images. Each has been hidden in a disclosure. Instead, read the alternative text I provide and visualize how it may look. Then read the automatically generated alternative text, and try to visualize it then. Consider how they differ. I took the original alt text and the most descriptive auto-generated alt text and fed each into Craiyon and Midjourney, two self-proclaimed AI tools for generating images from nothing more than a text prompt. Start comparing the images. As you visually compare each, think about how a screen reader user might have benefited from the more descriptive alt text. Obviously context matters for what alt text you choose, and the alt text might change for an image as it is used in other contexts: 13) Apple Store App to Offer Augmented Reality Shopping Feature on Your iPhoneA future version of the Apple Store app will offer an augmented reality feature that allows customers to point their iPhone toward a product like a Mac in an Apple Store and instantly receive more information about pricing and specifications in an overlay on their screen: 14) Why Apple's VR/AR Headset Could Be As Big As The iPhoneFor years, the iPhone has been Apple's hero product. But recent changes suggest that things won't be that way for much longer. Is Apple's new headset poised to take its place? 15) How To Get Siri To Read Text Messages On Your iPhoneSiri will only announce your messages as they arrive if you are using one of a small list of compatible earbuds: AirPods (2nd or 3rd Generation), AirPods Pro, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro: 16) Why The Ios Health App Is More Important Than You RealizeIf you've ever set up an Apple Watch, you're likely aware of the Apple Health app that's baked right into iOS. It stores plenty of data, from your name, blood type, and date of birth, to more complex information like how well you're sleeping. This one-stop-shop may be missed entirely by some, however, since it's never really front and center as part of iOS. And yet, the Health app's tendrils reach across almost everything you do on your iPhone — it pulls from screen time, activity, sleep data, and even heart rate data if you have an Apple Watch connected. If you've not jumped into the iOS Health app, here are some reasons to check it out: 17) The 19 Best Accessories and Tech Essentials for Your Dog | WiredFrom smart collars to pup backpacks, we've had our furry best friends try it all. Using Microsoft Teams with JAWS for Windows | Hartgen ConsultancyIt has been exactly two years since we produced a training course in the use of Microsoft Teams. Since that time, the Teams application has significantly changed. Two years in this context is a long period of time. There have been some accessibility regressions and changes. Moreover, depending upon which build of Teams your organization has access to, the level of accessibility you will receive will vary. Our upcoming training course, Winning Teams revisited, will do a number of things. It will teach someone who has never used the application before how to work with Teams. It will bring people up to speed in terms of changes in the application. Finally, it will give you strategies in terms of how to manage situations if accessibility is not all that it could be: 24) How to Save Your Smartphone's Battery Life | WiredShrug off your anxiety with these power-saving tips to extend the juice of your Apple or Android phone: 25) Notice: BrailleSense U2 Qwerty DiscontinuationThis announcement serves as formal notification that SELVAS Healthcare, Inc. will discontinue BrailleSense U2 Qwerty.
