The new version of Winamp is now available and most existing Winamp users may be surprised to learn that it is a web-based application. Head over to Winamp, create an account, and start using the service on the Web. It is quite the leap from a desktop audio player that has attracted a large fan base thanks to its features and customization options, to a web-based player. Users may have questions, including how they get their music collection to play in the player, or which features are new or have been removed. Since this new version of Winamp is web-based, it is necessary that users create an account to get started: 9) Take Full Control Over Your Keyboard With This Handy Windows Tool | Alaina Yee | PCWorldPersonalize your PC and incite chaos for other users of your computer? It's a double win. Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed that the Print Screen key's function would be changing in Windows 11. This venerable artifact on modern keyboards will eventually open Windows 11's Snipping tool by default, rather than taking a screenshot of your whole screen. This change won't be the first time Print Screen has changed in utility. Nor are you stuck with this new update when it launches — you can toggle it back to the existing functionality. But reading this news made think about two things — one, the legacy of Print Screen (now often shortened to Prt Scr on keyboards). I remember the days of when hitting that key meant it would actually print what was on your screen to a piece of paper. And two, how much I hate it when Microsoft upends decades of muscle memory with a tweak to a long-standing feature: 10) Petition Asking Microsoft Not To Discontinue The Soundscape App | KeelHaul Kovers | Change.orgPublisher (Di Blasi): Several readers submitted this as a Tidbit so we wanted to make sure that everyone knew about it. Microsoft announced in December 2022 that Soundscape (their app to help blind people navigate and guide them to places using 3D sound) would be discontinued. It was removed from the App Store on 3 January, and now the deactivation of existing installations is approaching. The company, popular for its AI-fueled ability to create images based on a series of prompts, launched more features including “repeat” and “permutations” for its pro subscribers. Paul DelSignore, creative technologist and artificial intelligence aficionado, took to Medium to break down how these could benefit users. He envisions a future with better search engine indexing and search functionality as a result of "/describe." Midjourney permits the user to upload an image upon encountering the "/describe" prompt and then presents the user with four descriptions its AI engine generates based on the image provided. These descriptions are followed by buttons numbered one to four — representing each generated description. I'm glad to announce a new version of enhanced tones add-on. I have released the version 2.0, because it implements several changes. Now this add-on allows you to choose between several waveforms, which will change the famous NVDA beeps. One of them is the sine wave, which is reminiscent of the one used by Linux's Orca. Personally I like it better and it is the one I use. There are sine, triangle, square, and sawtooth waves as well: 25) Sao Mai Braille (SMB) 23.4 ReleaseIn this release, two new noticeable features are to create Table Of Contents (TOC), and different data table types in Braille. In addition, software components to translate text, math and music are also updated to the latest versions, and there are many other improvements and bug fixes. Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive for Desktop, the three most popular cloud-based file-sharing programs, are also covered. So too is Adobe Acrobat Reader for accessing PDF files. The Xbox app accessibility settings menu serves as an easy to find location for all of the accessibility settings for the app itself. Beyond these settings it also provides shortcuts to relevant settings elsewhere on the system. Microsoft shared an animated YouTube video explaining the menu on their MSFTEnable Twitter and other social channels: 29) AXI — Accessibility Intelligence, An Interview With David O'Neill | Steve Faulkner | TPGiThere is a lot of optimism, enthusiasm and trepidation on the interwebs about the transformative effect Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have on everything from marketing to the creative arts. I often say that I am not an expert, but I know people who are. This is very much the case in terms of AI. Fortuitously, I have direct access to someone who is steeped in both accessibility knowledge and AI — or should I say Machine Learning (ML)? I am referring to David O'Neill, a Research Fellow at Vispero (the parent company of TPGi). He has a low social media profile but has quietly been driving improvements in automated accessibility testing, and accessibility testing in general, for decades. Hi, Tidbits readers, my name's Ben Moxey and I'm based in Newcastle, Australia. I'm really happy to be part of the Tidbits Team and look forward to supporting this valuable publication.
A bit about me and how I came to work in the BVI area. I grew up with very low vision in one eye due to retinal issues and relied on magnification and speech throughout school. They also tried to teach me Braille, but let's just say that I wasn't the best student! I was determined to use my remaining vision, no matter how impractical it was becoming.
When I was 20, the other retina came off and I've now been totally blind for about 21 years. This is when my love for assistive technology, and technology in general, really kicked in. I'll be honest, I was a bit of a computer nerd anyway, but I could quickly see how technology was my key to enhanced independence and lifestyle. I embraced screen readers, early smart phones and mobility aids. I even finally realised the huge value of Braille and finished off the course, though I'm still pretty slow!
Long story short (not one of my strong points), I've worked in the BVI area for 12 years with much of that spent reviewing, recommending and teaching assistive technology that suits the individual. I'm currently a proud employee of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT where I was the Practice Lead for the assistive technology service, and I've now moved into an Access and Technology Advisor role. Basically, this involves a strong focus on accessibility and technology innovation.

David lost his sight when he was 8 years old and had to learn Braille. Since then, he completed high school, went to Sydney University receiving a Social Work degree, spent 4 years drug and alcohol counselling, and then moved into his current job.
As a person who is blind, David believes that as a user of the technology that he recommends to others, that he is well situated to look at the strengths and shortcomings of the assistive technology that he comes across in both his professional and personal life, in particular, mainstream technology that is accessible.
