Publisher (Di Blasi): This article is, in a word, amazing. This is what technology "can" do. Highly recommended.
Max Collard: I'm albino. My eyes are ... different. In many ways, the world is not built for me. Every time I open Outlook on my iPhone and FaceID pops up, I have to pull the phone far away from its usual position — an inch and a half from my face — because the LIDAR sensors on the front that identify me were not designed to work at a distance that makes sense for my eyes.
It's been a while since Meta launched its own smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban. Now those who own Ray-Ban Meta can enjoy deeper integration with Apple Music thanks to Meta's latest update.

I was asked recently if a PDF generated by a colleague was accessible to me as a screen reader. As it happens, it wasn't, and I provided feedback. But it got me into looking for tools that allows people to check PDF accessibility.
11.) PDF Creation Tip | @A11yAwareness | Twitter | April 19, 2024
When creating PDFs NEVER use "Print to PDF." While a screen reader user may still be able to access the text of PDFs created in this manner, all headings, alternative text, and any other tag structures will be lost. Always use "Save As" or "Export" to preserve these tags.
YouTube uses speech recognition to automatically generate captions for videos when they are uploaded. These might need some editing and tweaking before publishing, but it's possible to edit these captions directly in YouTube.

The Galaxy A5x series represents the pinnacle of Samsung's popular A series, with the A55, released on March 11, 2024, being the latest addition targeting midrange markets. Despite its slightly higher price compared to similar spec devices from Chinese manufacturers, it boasts the trusted Samsung brand, more reliable software support, and wider availability. Specifically, the software and availability were key factors in my decision to replace my A71 with the A55. After spending a week with the phone, here are my thoughts and impressions.
Publisher (Di Blasi): Have you tried creating a new X (formerly Twitter) account lately using a web browser? As a marketing agency we need to setup new accounts for clients all the time. But I've never, ever seen anything like these new requirements. There were 12 sets of them. Each set was comprised of 4 groups of 6 dice. You had to choose the group of dice that added up to exactly 14. And you had to do this 12 times. I am sighted and I was exhausted. I have no idea what the audible equivalent of this might be. But I do know one thing. It's getting ridiculous. Sighted or not. And I'm starting to think that the real test for AGI (artificial general intelligence) may be the day that CAPTCHAS are no longer possible. Just think about that.
The Wall Street Journal: CAPTCHAS that aim to distinguish humans from nefarious bots are demanding more brain power; 'things are going to get even stranger'

For a number of years, in Leasey and the scripts for Microsoft Teams, we have had keystrokes available to set focus to different applications. They are used if you regularly want to focus upon specific programs, such as your Email client, word processor, social media client or perhaps a music player. People do like using this feature but it has had a limitation. Whenever JAWS is restarted, you have needed to set those windows for relocation back up again. This is no longer the case. It now works in this way as of the next update.
Airchat is taking on existing social media giants with its unique voice-first approach. Can it succeed?
When I first discovered the world of shortwave listening, many years before the internet, access to hobby related information was mostly available through over-the-air DX programs, monthly DX club bulletins, as well as a number of books and electronics magazines. I joined a few clubs including the Midwest DX Club, SPEEDX, and the Ontario DX Association, and eagerly awaited each issue of Electronics Illustrated and Popular Electronics (early 1970's) on the news stand. Later, in the 1980's, Popular Communications and Monitoring Times came along, though these were not always easy to find here in Canada.

It was Early March of this year, 2024. I heard an Episode on the Living Blindfully Podcast, hosted by Jonathan Mosen, interviewing Dean Blazie. The same Dean Blazie who had had so much influence on the Braille n speak product so many years ago. He was developing a new product, the BT Speak, which, he said, would be a modern Braille n Speak.
Early this week, Damien Wilde at 9to5 Google reported on Android's TalkBack screen reader now giving audio hints when using a fingerprint reader. The feature, he said, is included in Android 15 Beta 1 and was first spotted by Steven Clark on Threads. Clark is Blind, Wilde said.
In this review, listener Elijah reviews the new Seleste smart glasses, read aloud by Laura Kirker for Double Tap. Elijah provides an in-depth review of the glasses, discussing the physical appearance, setup process, and key features of the accompanying app.
Publisher (Di Blasi): If you decide that the H6essential is right for you, the A. T. Guys currently have them in stock.
Shelly Brisbin: I've used Zoom audio recorders for many years, including the Podtrac P4 I wrote about here a couple of years ago. I carry a Zoom H4n Pro in my backpack for radio field work. And a Zoom H6 has been my go-to in-person podcasting rig, since you can connect up to six mics, and make multitrack recordings with ease. But the display on my H6 crapped out, and the rubberized case began to suffer from what the Internet tells me is called “rubber reversion.” That means the case got all sticky. In the meantime, Zoom has released a set of new handheld recorders; the Essential series, with a couple of features I've been craving. So right before a big reporting trip, I replaced my H6 with the H6essential.
We've added image descriptions for all the blind and partially sighted Swifties out there. You know who you are!

Following on from an already promising start to 2024, we are delighted to announce that we have been recognized as one of the 50 most innovative robotics developments of the past year at the RBR50 Robotics Innovation Awards.
We have featured a near countless number of iPhone cases around here over the years, but today it's time to take a look at “the world's first action-button phone case.” Apple introduced the new haptic Action Button on its latest iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max handsets, and now the folks at Bitmo Lab — a brand that originates from collaborations with sspai and JSAUX — are ready to debut the new BANG!CASE.
Smartphones are ubiquitous. People use them for calling, texting, navigation, and gaming. While current smartphones are accessible, using touchscreens nonvisually presents a learning curve. Getting used to specialized gestures and acclimating to typing on completely flat surfaces can even pose as deterrents to potential users. Some relatively new products help bridge this gap, including the SmartVision 3 manufactured by RAZ Mobility.

For over 80 years, the expertise of Carroll Center staff has provided help for thousands of blind and visually impaired persons with diverse opportunities for success and independent living.
The world's first accessible cross-platform remote support package is now more affordable than ever! Remote Incident Manager proudly serves a number of use cases, from the support recipient to the full-time technician. But what if you only have occasional tech support gigs? What if you've been brought on to a training initiative in your state's blindness organization, and you're only providing the training for two weeks? Here's where our Pro passes come in handy. These passes allow you to leverage all of RIM's pro features, including unattended targets, without the need for a subscription. For as little as $35, you can store an entire week of Pro in your account, to be activated exactly when you need the service. $60 gets you two weeks, and $120 gets you a month pass! You can accumulate several of these passes if desired, and if you configure any unattended targets during the duration of one of your passes, they will still be present when you activate your next pass! Sign up today!

We have the lowest prices on Victor Stream 3 and the SensePlayers from HIMS in the United States. Why can we say that at GuideLights with such certainty? Because our Stream 3 bundle is $509, which includes the Stream 3, our own leather case, and your choice of either an open ear / bone conduction pair of headphones or a 256GB media card. Our SensePlayer OCR bundle is $729; the non-OCR bundle is $599, and that also includes the case and your choice of either card or headphones. Shipping is a flat fee, usually around $12. About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use.
In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.
What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
If you're like me, you probably have more things to plug into your computer than available ports. That's why we've now added the Pluggable USB-C 7-in-1 Hub. Plug it into your laptop and you will get 3 USB ports, SD and Micro SD card slots, a USBC charging port, and an HDMI video port. It's available now for just $29.95.

Mobility can be tricky. Ultrasound obstacle detectors to detect upper body obstacles, handheld GPS for turn-by-turn navigation, smart glasses to read building numbers or get scene descriptions... What if all of that was done by a single device? biped is the world's first all-in-one mobility harness. It's worn on the shoulders, has cameras on the left side of the chest, a small AI computer on the right side, and batteries behind the neck. The device can detect obstacles (head or ground level, including holes), provide GPS navigation with turn-by-turn instructions, and upon the press of the "AI button" on the right side of the chest, generate descriptions of your surroundings. biped was developed in Switzerland, with 250 beta-testers, O&M trainers, and autonomous driving researchers.

About: Biped.ai is an innovative company that specializes in creating advanced mobility aids for people with vision loss. Their flagship product is the biped smart harness, a groundbreaking device designed to aid visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings with greater ease and safety.
Company Overview: Biped.ai operates under the umbrella of Fusion Lab Technologies Sàrl, a company based in Switzerland. The company was established with a commitment to enhancing mobility and independence for those with vision impairments. Biped.ai has made significant strides in this field by leveraging cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence.
Product Description: The biped smart harness is a lightweight (900 grams) and wearable device designed to be worn on the shoulders. It's equipped with three cameras positioned on the left side of the chest, a battery located behind the neck, and a small computer on the right side of the chest. These components work in tandem to provide a self-driving car-like experience for pedestrians.
The harness is capable of detecting a wide range of obstacles, including holes, branches, traffic signs, pedestrians, bicycles, and electric scooters. It utilizes artificial intelligence to predict collision risks and provides auditory warnings through Bluetooth headphones. These warnings are issued as short "beeps" to alert the user of potential dangers. Additionally, the device is equipped with GPS functionality to offer turn-by-turn navigation instructions, which are also relayed through the headphones.
Features and Functionality:
Obstacle Detection: The harness uses its cameras to scan a 170-degree field of view, functioning effectively both day and night. It can identify various obstacles and provides auditory warnings to the user.
GPS Navigation: The device integrates GPS to deliver navigation instructions and is capable of detecting crosswalks and traffic lights for enhanced navigation support.
Design: Weighing just 900 grams, the biped is designed for comfort and ease of use. It is worn on the shoulders, with strategically placed components for optimal functionality.
Are your PDFs actually accessible?
There's a lack of regulation in this industry. Without a governing body ensuring PDF remediation companies are remediating correctly, anyone can claim to know what they're doing!
Too many PDF remediation companies rely solely on automation. But, full accessibility requires manual testing.
Braille Works will review the accessibility of your PDF free of charge.
If your PDF is not accessible, we'll tell you where it falls short. If it is accessible, we'll celebrate with you!
Upload your PDF today and know for sure if it's accessible and compliant.
