JAWS for Windows Tips.

Inline Frames, also known as iframes, are embedded directly within a Web page and display the contents of another page.

Visually, these types of frames usually look like images or banners. iframes are often used by Websites to display advertisements. They can also be used to embed interactive applications into web pages, such as an embedded video player.

You can quickly determine if a page contains one or more iframes by pressing INSERT+F9 to open a list of all frames, or use the M or SHIFT+M Navigation Quick Keys to move through frames on the page.

By default, JAWS reads the contents of iframes as you navigate with the Virtual Cursor, so if you find you are frequently encountering advertisements in the middle of articles from your favorite news websites, you can tell JAWS to ignore iframes for that specific website to help provide a more pleasant reading experience.

Since iframes can potentially be used to display content besides adds, we recommend turning them off on a site-by-site basis, and not globally for all web pages.

Here's how:

1. Open the web page containing the iframes you do not want JAWS to read.

2. Press INSERT+6 on the number row to open Settings Center.

3. Press CTRL+SHIFT+W to load settings for the current website. Changes you make now will only take affect when pages on the particular site are opened.

4. Type "inline" without the quotes.

5. Press DOWN ARROW to move to Ignore inline frames in the filtered results of the tree view.

6. Press SPACEBAR to toggle this setting on.

7. Press TAB to move to the OK button and press ENTER to save your change and close Settings Center.
