JAWS Power Tip: How To Use Automatic Language Detection
Released: 12/19/2024
For users who read documents or web pages in various languages, there are times when authors do not use the correct language tags, which JAWS relies on by default in order to switch to the appropriate voice for a specific language.
JAWS can now automatically detect the language in use and adjust its voice based on the written language. This feature runs entirely on your computer and does not access the Internet.
To enable this option:
1.) Press INSERT+6 on the number row to open Settings Center.
2.) Press DOWN ARROW until you locate the Text Processing group, then press RIGHT ARROW to expand it.
3.) Press DOWN ARROW until you locate the Language processing subgroup, then press RIGHT ARROW to expand it.
4.) Press DOWN ARROW to navigate to the Detect Language option, and press the SPACEBAR until Based on AI predictions is selected.
5.) Press ALT+A to apply your changes.
6.) Press TAB to navigate to OK and press ENTER.
If you find that JAWS does not automatically switch languages in an application even when the correct voice is installed, open Settings Center while focused in the specific application and check the Detect Language option.
This setting is off by default for certain applications.
