JAWS Power Tip: How To Clear the Formatting of a Word Document
Released: 8/28/2025

Document formatting refers to the layout and appearance of content.
This adds consistency throughout and makes it easier to read.
Formatting characteristics include font type and size, bold, underline, italic, and line spacing. When using JAWS, press INSERT+F if using desktop keyboard layout or CAPS LOCK+F if using laptop layout to hear the formatting of your document.
Press INSERT or CAPS LOCK, then tap F twice quickly to display this information in the JAWS Virtual Viewer.
Read it using your arrow keys, then press ESC to return focus to your document.
There are times, like When content has been copied and pasted from another source that contains different formatting, you may want to clear the formatting so your document does not contain any unwanted formatting characteristics. To do this:
1.) Select the text that contains the formatting you want to clear. For example, press SHIFT+DOWN ARROW to select one line at a time, or CTRL+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW to select one word at a time.
2.) Press CTRL+SHIFT+N to activate the clear formatting command. The formatting will revert to the default Normal Style for your Word document.
3.) Press any arrow key to deselect the text, then press INSERT+F if using desktop keyboard layout or CAPS LOCK+F if using laptop layout to hear JAWS speak the formatting of your document.
