19) How the Notification History Coexists with our JAWS-Based Products | Brian Hartgen, Hartgen Consultancy

Many people will be aware that in the update to JAWS version 2022 just released, a feature is in place to support alerts and notifications sent by the focused application or Windows itself to the screen-reader. This was widely publicized in the Mosen at Large Podcast. Of course, Jonathan Mosen, host of the podcast, provided an excellent demonstration of the capabilities of the Notification History feature, together with describing the kinds of alerts and notifications which are sent to JAWS and which potentially can be filtered out or viewed in a list. In the interests of efficiency, some of our products have filtered out such alerts and notifications for some considerable time, so I want to tell you how our various products fit into the new tool Vispero are providing so you are not caught out:

25) Accessibility in Fedora Workstation

The first concerted effort to support accessibility under Linux was undertaken by Sun Microsystems when they decided to use GNOME for Solaris. Sun put together a team focused on building the pieces to make GNOME 2 fully accessible and worked with hardware makers to make sure things like Braille devices worked well. We even heard claims that GNOME and Linux had the best accessibility of any operating system for a while due to this effort. As Sun started struggling and got acquired by Oracle this accessibility effort eventually trailed off with the community trying to pick up the slack afterwards. Especially engineers from Igalia were quite active for a while trying to keep the accessibility support working well:

26) Experiment Shows Surprising Results Of Echolocation

Echolocation has been used as a way for blind people to navigate, despite the skill's usefulness, few blind people have actually learned how to use echolocation. Now, though, researchers say humans can learn echolocation in as little as 10 weeks:

27) 6 Accessibility Basics Cause 97% of Errors

I repeatedly encounter the same six issues when evaluating a website's accessibility, as do most consultants. I'd like to imagine a world where companies clean up most accessibility glitches in-house and hire consultants only to solve highly technical problems. Alas, many companies struggle with implementing the basics. Addressing the six common errors below solves many accessibility snafus, greatly helping vision-impaired users:

29) Audio Description Quality: Best Practices and Legal Standards

Video is everywhere. It's on our TVs, computers, smartphones, tablets, and even some smart refrigerators. But have you ever wondered how blind and low vision viewers access video content? To fully enjoy all the movies, TV shows, and other video content we so much love to watch, people with vision loss rely on audio description (AD) to access the visual elements of a video. Unfortunately, the quality of AD varies significantly among its providers. And so do consumer preferences on what visual information should be described, in how much detail, and how the descriptions should be voiced:

30) Firefox 102: New ESR Base And Improved Security

One bug fix to Firefox 102 will be of relevance to screen reader users: Pressing Enter while using a Screen Reader on Windows no longer activates the wrong element and/or another window:

9) Some (More) Thoughts On Smart Canes | From The Blog Of Derek Reimer

In early 2021, I wrote a blog post about smart canes, why they usually are hype, and why canes have the design elements that make them so versatile. This blog post got a couple orders of magnitude more traffic than I expected, and based on the feedback I have received, it was much more educational than I would have expected. It has been posted on many peoples blogs, and even Hacker News. I want to make sure the positive reception of my article is used to guide the industry in an appropriate direction, and generate new useful technologies, instead of being cynical and bashing anyone who may have the thought to attach something to a cane. I will do this by explaining some of the drawbacks to having objects on a cane, and travel implements we could design that would achieve useful goals for blind people, while being more robust:

This talk will cover the common threads of those disclosures, the value of neurodivergent team members, and the experiences positive and negative that neurodivergent applicants face in looking for work within the tech sector and for technology roles in other industries. We'll be sharing what in the interview processes triggered negative outcomes and what behaviors and processes facilitated positive outcomes. We'll be making suggestions for changes hiring professionals can make as well as accommodations that can be asked for and should be expected. 6) Best Practices to Structure Accessibility Testing

July 20th 2022 | 9AM PT, 10AM MT, 11AM CT, 12PM ET, 4PM GMT | This webinar will cover common gaps in how organizations implement accessibility testing. These gaps complicate communication within an organization and lead to barriers for people with disabilities. Once the common gaps have been identified, we will review step-by-step instructions on how to reduce these gaps. Participants will leave with a clear plan for accessibility testing that is practical and sustainable. With this plan, organizations can increase the coverage and precision of their testing while decreasing the overall amount of test results. Additionally, participants will learn: The pros and cons of the different automated accessibility testing libraries and which one is right for their organization. The limitations of automated testing and how to bridge the gap with manual testing. How to track progress on errors and verify what's been fixed from one sprint to the next. While this webinar focuses on building accessibility testing skills with the ARC Platform, the lessons are applicable to all testing libraries. With the evolution of AI and machine learning, there are many new innovations in automated accessibility testing. This webinar evaluates their effectiveness and looks ahead to how they could affect accessibility testing. Register today:

About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well.

What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
